A PROJECT BY ALY GRIMES AND WILL HURT
Separated by 8,068km Fordlândia and Tativille (now razed to the ground), situated in their respective Amazonian and concrete jungles and created against all odds, now serve as physical and metaphorical monuments to both economic failure and the unrelenting desire to establish a legacy. Our exhibition intends to draw parallels between the two self-funded projects both rooted in 20th century capitalist structures, yet touch on contemporary issues regarding the environment, sustainability and patriarchy in South America and Europe. It will meanwhile provide a backdrop for a truly diverse public programme that will address these themes and include an exhibition opening, artist and curator talks, ‘in conversation’ events with our Brazilian artist and curator peers in São Paulo and collaborative participation events with BIENALSUR.
Aly Grimes is a Curator and Producer based between the UK and Scandinavia. Her work is centralised around advancements in digital art and culture, collaborative methodologies and interdisciplinary modes of practice.
Will Hurt is a Visual Artist and Creative Technologist based in Norwich, UK. His work investigates novel modes of drawing and virtual representations of physical spaces.
'Ego Failure' - a piece of software continually scraping the internet for live commodity trading prices of rubber, coffee, steel and the share price of a number of film studios and the Ford Motor Company. This data will be used to procedurally recut Tati's 'Playtime' and present it both online and in situ in gallery spaces.
'Currents of Currency' - a double-height water tower sculpture constructed from basic building materials prevalent at both sites, its dimensions determined by contacting local residents of Fordlândia to help us gather the physical dimensions of the water tower that remains there, meanwhile fostering and documenting cross-cultural connections as we “stay at home and keep creating”.
